Hi, I'm Matthew Jones and I studied within History at the University of Southampton.

I would definitely recommend studying History. It is a topic that encourages the student to develop skills that are valued and appreciated by employers far beyond the obvious ‘history’ careers of archives, museums and teaching.

How did you get interested in History?

I have been interested in History for as long as I can remember.

Why did you choose to study at Southampton?

I chose Southampton because it has a History department with an excellent reputation. Also, I was born and bred in Hampshire so it was nice to stay close to home.

What did you like most about your degree programme?

I enjoyed the chance to study different periods of History and to concentrate on a specific topic during my final year for the dissertation, which enabled me to draw upon some of the wonderful special collections held by the University Library.

Which historical periods did you like to study?

I have always been very keen on 20th century history, but I now enjoy learning about all periods of British history from the Norman Conquest onwards.

What was the best thing about living and studying in Southampton?

It was nice to study somewhere close to the sea! And Southampton is a great city.

What have you been doing since you graduated?

I have been an archivist in local authority record offices for most of my career. I also spent 3 years working as a researcher for a Member of Parliament.

Has studying History helped you in your career?

A good understanding of British history is extremely valuable, although not essential, for a career in archives.

Are you still interested in History?

I am still interested in History and enjoy a job that allows me to learn more about the subject on a day-today basis from original manuscripts.

Would you recommend studying the subject to other people?

I would definitely recommend studying History. It is a topic that encourages the student to develop skills that are valued and appreciated by employers far beyond the obvious ‘history’ careers of archives, museums and teaching.
