Third-year History student Billy FitzJohn has just been elected as Southampton University Students’ Union (SUSU) President.

Billy has long been actively involved in SUSU. He says:"I was Chamberlain Halls President, publicity officer for the History Society, Humanities School President ... [and have] sat on Union Council (the highest decision making body in SUSU) since I was a fresher. I was also my halls Events Manager when I was in first year. "

He found these roles ‘a great experience’ and hence decided to stand for election as SUSU President in the belief that he could ‘make a difference and help take the Union forward. I want to make our Union one of the best in the country and make sure that we are providing the opportunities, experiences and representation that Southampton students deserve.’

He admits that his history studies at the University of Southampton have helped him win this position of leadership. "The way history is taught helped me become a more confident debater and speaker in an environment where you don't always know everybody in the room."

He is not certain where his future career lies and says: "I'm just going to focus on doing the best possible job for the Students’ Union ... It’s a very exciting time for me!"

History congratulates Billy and wishes him well during his Presidency of SUSU!
