Jewish Life in Berlin, 1933-1941

Professor of Modern Jewish/non-Jewish Relations at Southampton, Joachim Schloer, has published a fascinating new book, titled Jewish Life in Berlin, 1933-1941, recording the work of German-Polish photographer Abraham Pisarek.

Abraham Pisarek’s photographs document the increasingly narrow public space for the Jews of Berlin under Nazi rule. They show places of refuge, such as synagogues, community centres, and they document cultural activities in concerts or sports events. The photographs, taken between 1933 and 1941, also document the search for a safe haven "somewhere in the world ". Many of the photographs that we know from the period have been taken by the perpetrators. Pisarek’s photograph open a space for the perception of human action and human dignity in the face of hardship and despair. Joachim’s essay places these documents in the context of the cultural and topographical history of Jewish life in Berlin.
