1066 Battle of Hastings Event

This year marks the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings, the most famous battle in English history. To commemorate this event, Lifelong Learning at the University of Southampton will be hosting a study day on the battle and its legacy. No prior knowledge of this period in history is necessary, so why not come along and join us for a day of fascinating talks, with some of our leading academics? The Norman Conquest was a seismic moment in the history of England, its legacy can be found in the words we speak, the monuments they left behind and the names that we give to our children. In this study day we will examine the impact of the battle through the surviving sources, in particular the Bayeux Tapestry. We will also look at Anglo Saxon literature and examine how this was affected by the conquest, asking the question was this really the death of Anglo Saxon England? Moving on, we will discuss the Domesday book, a unique insight into life in England post-conquest, as well as a useful tool to maximise revenue from taxation! Lastly, we will look at the most striking landmark the Normans have left us, the castle. This study day will be held on Saturday 15 October 2016 at Avenue Campus at the University of Southampton.
