Event details

Lauren will be speaking to her PhD research on this topic, which emphasises maritime links between the slave trade and convict transportation. This work compares the logistical similarities and differences of transporting what are traditionally seen as very separate groups of coerced migrants. It demonstrates that relocating slaves for business and transporting convicts as part of the British penal system generated income for a small group of merchants who invested in both ventures. As well as identifying the merchants involved in both coerced migration system, this work sheds light on the captains, surgeons and captives who were involved in both maritime voyages. All welcome, including undergraduates. Refreshments provided.
