PhD History
Typically, you can expect to spend up to four years studying for your PhD on a full-time basis, or up to seven years if you choose to study part time.

Postgraduate Research Degrees in History at Southampton
We provide training in research and related skills, offer regular and frequent meetings with supervisors and advisers, and aim to integrate our students fully into the life of the programme. Our students are strongly encouraged to participate in our research seminars, at which both eminent visiting speakers and our own staff and research students contribute to lively and informative discussions.
PhD programmes can be studied part time or full time. PhD examination is by a major thesis, usually submitted after three years (or six years' part-time) research.
There is a large and vibrant postgraduate research community in History, with over 30 students currently registered. We have a successful record in attracting research funding to support research students. Over several years our postgraduate research students have successfully secured Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) studentships, and a number are funded by other awards. Additional funding is available for projects relating to local history. Students may also apply to the postgraduate research coordinator for sums to fund research trips, research training and conference attendance.
History's doctoral students have a record of finding academic and other posts of which we are proud, and we put great emphasis on offering an all-round preparation for a professional career. We can offer expert supervision in a broad range of research areas, including a number not normally found in British universities.
