The University of Southampton has been awarded Silver by the Teaching Excellence & Student Outcomes Framework (TEF) Panel. The award is now valid for up to three years.

The Silver award clearly reflects Southampton’s priority and focus on delivering a transformative experience that enables and encourages students to excel during their time at the University and to continue their success as graduates throughout their lives.

News of Southampton’s Silver TEF award follows the University’s climb of six places to 20th in the latest Complete University Guide published in April this year, and 12-place rise to 23rd in the Guardian University Guide, published in May.

In its assessment of Southampton’s metrics and written submission for 2018, the TEF Panel highlights clear evidence of the University’s:

  • support for all new undergraduates through their transition to higher education
  • strategic commitment to enhancing the quality of teaching
  • learning environment in which students participate actively in research
  • investment in physical and digital resources supporting student learning
  • excellent student continuation and progression rates
  • effective support and initiatives focused on employability.

“We are very pleased to receive the Silver TEF award,  recognising the work of our dedicated staff who are committed to delivering an excellent educational experience in a stimulating research-informed environment, together with the strong engagement of our student community,” said Professor Sir Christopher Snowden, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton. “We are also very grateful to the many staff and students throughout the institution who directly contributed to our TEF submission and to our Students’ Union whose contributions were vital to our success.”

“For our students and graduates, the Silver award is assurance that their experience at the University of Southampton will translate into excellent graduate outcomes,” Professor Snowden concluded.

The TEF was developed by the UK government’s Department for Education and carried out by the Office for Students to recognise excellent teaching in UK higher education providers by rating them as gold, silver or bronze. The ratings are judged by an independent panel of students, academics and other experts.

The University of Southampton’s TEF submission and award for 2018 is available on the Office for students website.
