The Students’ Union at the University of Southampton (SUSU) has donated an all-time record-breaking £235,313.63 to charity over the 2018-19 academic year.

The total was achieved through student fundraising and SUSU’s Raise and Give (RAG) Group through a variety of events and activities students including mountain treks, bake sales, quiz nights, 10k runs and much more. In the last five years (since 2014-18), SUSU has raised a remarkable £1.06M through its activities, breaking its own annual fundraising record in each of the last three years.

This year’s donations have benefited over 35 charities including four organisations voted by students as core charities for the year - Help RefugeesAnthony NolanYellow Door and Trinity Winchester.

Fiona Sunderland, SUSU’s VP Activities, says: “I’m absolutely amazed by the record breaking total raised this year. A massive congratulations to all those involved and thank you to everyone in RAG for your tireless efforts, it has really paid off. I look forward to working with you this year and supporting your amazing work.”

“On behalf of RAG, we would like to say a huge thank you to all of those who volunteered with us, fundraised either by themselves or through societies and to those who came to our events!,” said Siobhan La Roche-Seeley, the University’s RAG President. “Thousands of students were involved with us through attending our events or helping to put them on and we couldn’t have raised such an amazing amount for charity without their support.

“A special mention to our 2018/19 RAG President Janane Rajamohan who consistently encouraged and supported all of us on committee,” Siobahn continued.  “Without her I don’t think we could have broken the record and continued to help such worthwhile causes. I’m looking forward to stepping into her shoes and can’t wait to carry on the incredible work RAG, and Southampton students, do each year!”

Yellow Door offers a range of free services across Southampton and Western Hampshire dedicated to supporting those who have experienced – or are at risk of – domestic and sexual abuse. A spokesperson for the charity said: “Yellow Door is thrilled that the students of the University of Southampton voted for us to become one of their 4 core charities for 2018-19. We are extremely proud of the collaborative work we have done with them over the course of the year and can’t thank the students enough for the much needed funds they have raised towards the work that we do here in preventing and responding to those affected by domestic and sexual abuse (DSA).”

A long-standing fixture amongst students at Southampton, SUSU’s RAG Society celebrated its 90th anniversary in 2017. For 2019-20, SUSU’s core charities will be Medicins Sans Frontieres , Alzheimer’s SocietySolent Mind and Naomi House & Jacksplace.
