Southampton's global ranking for Statistics & Operational Research has risen to 37th.

Southampton’s global ranking for Statistics & Operational Research has risen an impressive 11 places this year to 37th in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject for 2020.

Professor Marika Taylor, the University’s Head of School within Mathematical Sciences, praised her colleagues for Southampton’s continued success in this field. “This ranking is recognition of our high quality research and education in statistics and operational research, and our impactful work with government, business and industry,” Professor Taylor emphasised. “Both CORMSIS (Centre for Operational Research, Management Sciences and Information Systems) and S3RI (Southampton Statistical Sciences Research Institute) are world class research centres.”

Dr Christine Currie, Associate Professor of Operational Research and Director of CORMSIS added: “CORMSIS is an internationally-leading centre in Operational Research and it’s great to see this being recognised by QS. We bring together over 50 academics in operational research from Mathematical Sciences and Southampton Business School to carry out world-class research and teaching, working closely with industry and public services.”

Professor Dankmar Böhning, Director of the S3RI, stressed the benefits of Southampton being home to one of the UK’s largest concentration of statisticians. “It is a great pleasure to see that S3RI enjoys a global reputation for excellence in research into core statistical methodologies with many direct applications, particularly in the social sciences, engineering, health and medicine. Our 50 academics, research and support staff make up one of the largest groups of statisticians in the UK. We provide specialist expertise to many companies and organisations worldwide; the results of our collaborations inform our teaching so students directly benefit from our world-leading international research.”

For Nikos Tzavidis, Professor of Statistical Methodology and Head of Economic, Social and Political Sciences, the ranking also reflects the diversity of expertise offered through a number of specialist centres within the University.

“This ranking provides evidence of the high quality research and education - at Undergraduate, Masters and PhD levels- in Statistics and Operational Research at the University of Southampton.

“Our academics make up one of the largest groups of statisticians in the UK working on research areas such as design of experiments, survey and official statistics methodology, statistical modelling, biostatistics and policy and evaluation,” Professor Tzavidis continued. “Our research is interdisciplinary and impacts government, business and industry.

“Both S3RI and CORMSIS are world class centres at the centre of our research activity working alongside the Schools of Economic Social and Political Sciences (Department of Social Statistics and Demography), Mathematics and the Business School,” he concluded.
