For World Oceans Day 2021 the University of Southampton has created a documentary, which takes a deeper look at the ocean research being carried out at NOCs and Boldrewood, and how our community is helping to unlock the mysteries of the deep.

‘Everyone, everywhere is inextricably connected to and utterly dependent upon the existence of the sea.’

‘Health to the ocean means health to us.’

Deep below the surface of our ocean is an intricate bionetwork that we all depend on and one we must all work together to protect.

The documentary features Stacey Felgate, a Postgraduate Research student, who has been leading a land-ocean study in Belize. Her work has been looking at how deforestation is affecting the carbon and nutrient cycles in the ocean which contains the world’s second largest reef.

Thierry Bujard, a Maritime Engineering student, has developed a robot that demonstrates the benefits of using resonance for underwater propulsion. The robot is modelled on nature’s most efficient marine animals – squid and jellyfish - and has the potential to assist with sensitive ocean studies.

Also featured in the documentary is Jemma Sargeant, a Masters student in Marine Biology and a United Nations Youth Ambassador. Jemma highlights the importance of future generations getting involved in the protection of our oceans in the years to come.
