How it works

Once you’re a member you have a choice of dentists to visit; your own or one located at a Bupa owned or approved dental centre.

Make your appointment to visit the dentist, making sure that if using a Bupa owned or approved dental centre you let them know you have Dental insurance with Bupa. Check out this video explaining Bupa’s approved network and dentist finder:

The cost 

Plans start from £10.61 per month, with increasing annual benefit limits based on the level you sign up to. Check out the table below for costs and our Bupa Membership Guide for detail about the annual limits.

Costs effective from 1 July 2022 to 30 June 2023.

* Eligible dependent children are covered until they turn 25 or if they’re married. There is no limit to the number of eligible dependants.

How to join

Signing up is easy, simply use our Bupa Dental Form – application/amendment 2022 (MS Form).

Please read the membership guide before completing the form, which describes the key entitlements of the dental plan. Full terms and conditions of the contract are in the membership guide.

You can join the scheme within one month of working at the University of Southampton, or during our annual June membership window.

Once you’ve joined, payroll deductions will commence from the next available pay date, backdated where necessary to the start of your policy. Any dental treatment costs incurred before the commencement date of this insurance will not be eligible for reimbursement.

Leaving the scheme

Should you leave the University, your membership in the Dental Plan will be cancelled with effect from your leaving date with payroll deductions ceasing accordingly. Whilst you cannot continue your University plan privately, Bupa do offer personal membership plans. Further information can be found at

You may not amend or cancel your membership outside of our June membership window each year. However, should you undergo a ‘qualifying event’ as defined by the University of Southampton then changes may take place. Each case will be reviewed in isolation, please contact for more details.
