Dental scheme

When can I join?

New joiners to the University can join the dental plan within one month of their employment start date.

The next opportunity for all staff to join the dental plan is 1 July 2019.

What is dental insurance?

The voluntary dental plan benefit provides cover to help make costly dental treatment more affordable.  You can visit any dentist of your choice and are able to choose a level of cover that suits you best - whether NHS or private.

Who is the provider?

The insurance is underwritten by Unum Limited under the trading name Unum Dental.  Unum Dental  is one of the UK’s leading corporate dental insurance providers, arranging cover for over 160,000 members.

How does it work?

There are 5 levels of cover to choose from.  As private fees can vary from dentist to dentist, you should compare your own dentist’s charges to the cover available to ensure you select the plan that’s right for you.

Cover for your family

You can include your spouse and any children at the same level of cover you choose for yourself.  Children can be included up to aged 30 or aged 25 for orthodontic treatment.  Please note that benefits apply for each insured adult, but are divided between any children covered.

When considering whether to add children to your policy, remember that children who visit an NHS dentist receive free NHS dental treatment if they are under 18, (19 if they in full-time education) at the start of the Flex year.  For further details about who is entitled to free NHS dental care, please visit the NHS site.

Please check the full plan details and the policy document before joining the plan. This information is held on your employer’s benefits site or can be obtained from Unum Dental on request.
