Extended carers' leave

The Extended Carers’ Leave Policy sets out additional leave provisions to support employees with caring commitments. This policy will allow an employee paid time off of up to two weeks in the leave year and can be used to:

• Look after a dependant who is recovering from a serious illness; or

• Look after a dependant who is terminally ill; or

• Settle a dependant into a care home.

To be eligible the employee must have significant caring responsibilities for a dependant who is unable to care for him or herself (defined as a Spouse or civil partner, partner (including same-sex partner), child or parent of the employee or any member of the employee’s household who is not their employee, tenant, lodger or boarder) and have at least 26 weeks continuous service with the University.

The University’s annual leave year runs from 1 October to 30 September each year. Managers should ensure that any approved Extended Carers’ Leave is formally recorded via MyView under “Record an absence”.

Further guidance is found in our policy document, available below.
