When you come to work in the UK you will have to register for a National Insurance number. This means you will immediately start paying National Insurance contributions in the UK on the same basis as other people who normally live and work here. To register for a National Insurance number telephone the Jobcentre Plus National Insurance number application line on 0845 600 0643, Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.
You must contact HM Revenue and Customs when you leave the UK. If you are not required to fill in a tax return, you will have to complete a P85 application. Please see HMRC for more information and the application.
When leaving the UK you must contact your gas and electric and water supplier a few days before your departure and inform them you are leaving. You will need to give the companies meter readings so they can issue you with the final bills.
When leaving it is important to give your landlord a forwarding address so your deposit can be returned to you. Remember to cancel all internet and phone contracts or inform them of your move.
When leaving employment it is also vital you receive your P45. This shows how much you were paid and shows proof that you’ve paid UK taxes.
