The University is committed to providing our staff with an environment that promotes health and well-being and ensures safe working. The service offered is either by the University’s internal Occupational Health nurse or in collaboration with the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.
The Occupational Health process is completely consensual. If you feel you would benefit from speaking with Occupational Health then please contact either your line manager or HR who can discuss this further with you. Alternatively, your line manager may discuss referring you to Occupational Health to help support you at work.
If a line manager thinks they may need to refer their employee to Occupational Health they should first contact Ask HR to establish if an Occupational Health referral is appropriate, or if there are other options they should be exploring first.
Once they've discussed their concerns with Ask HR and they've made the decision to proceed with an Occupational Health referral, they should then discuss this with their employee. The line manager will need their employee's consent before they can refer them to Occupational Health.
The next steps is to complete the referral form (which can be downloaded below). The form needs to signed by the line manager and the employee.
Once the form is completed and signed, it needs to be forwarded, with any supporting material (including the employee's current job description), to the University’s Occupational Health Manager, Flory Truelson: F.Truelson@soton.ac.uk.
The Occupational Health Manager will review the referral and either contact the line manager and their employee to offer advice, or forward the referral to Occupational Health.
Following an assessment of the staff member, Occupational Health will send a copy of the report to the employee to review. If they're happy with the assessment it will be sent to the employee's line manager and HR notified.
