Dr Alessia Cogo is a Lecturer in Applied Linguistics in Modern Languages at the University of Southampton.

I am an applied linguist with a background in modern languages. I have taught Italian and English as a second language, as well as Applied Linguistic and Sociolinguistic modules at King's College London and at the University of Surrey (UK). Since 2010 I have been a lecturer in Applied Linguistics at the University of Southampton.

Research interests

I am interested in language diversity in different contexts, especially the relationship between English and other languages in international environments and in specific genres. I explore these areas from a pragmatic perspective and relate to intercultural issues, identity, ideology and power relations.

I am founder and co-convenor of the AILA ReN on ELF
I am Reviews Editor of the ELTJ (English Language Teaching Journal)

I coordinate the Multilingualism Research Group and member of the Centre for Applied Language Research (CALR), the Centre for Global Englishes (CGE) and the Centre for Transnational Studies (TNS).

Learning, use and perceptions of English as a Lingua Franca communication in European contexts (LINEE) - Dormant

This collaborative project with partners in Southampton, Szeged and Prague forms part of the wider LINEE network funded under the EU 6th Framework (Languages in a Network of European Excellence).
