Dr Alicia Pozo-Gutierrez is a Lecturer within Modern Languages at the University of Southampton.

Alicia Pozo-Gutierrez holds a BA in Iberian & Latin American Studies and a PhD in Hispanic Studies from the University of Southampton entitled 'Between assimilation and transnationalism: A socio-cultural case study of Spanish migration to Hampshire and Dorset (1950s-1970s)'.

Research interests

Research interests include socio-cultural and linguistic aspects of migration as well as cultural representations of migrants in the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking worlds.

Current research projects

I am currently piloting a research project on the memories of the Spanish democratic transition, using oral history interviews amongst Spanish women of different generations. The aim of this project is to compare different perceptions of social and political change.

In collaboration with Jaine Beswick, I have recently been awarded a University of Southampton Faculty of Humanities Small Award for Inter-disciplinary Research, for an on-going project entitled ‘Migrant Identities and Linguistic Practices: A Comparative Study of UK South Coast Spanish and Portuguese Communities’.

Following an Adventures in Research Award from the University of Southampton I am establishing in collaboration with Dr Scott Soo a research project that will focus on the experiences and memories of return migration of Spaniards from the UK and France during the Spanish democratic transition.

Affiliate research group

Exilio Network: Research into Refugees and other Migrations

I have teaching commitments in European, Spanish and Portuguese Social and Political Studies undergraduate courses.

Postgraduate supervision

I would welcome postgraduate students interested in exploring the following topics associated with the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking worlds from an interdisciplinary perspective across the humanities and social sciences:

  • Social and cultural aspects of contemporary migrations to and from Spain and Portugal, in particular, cultural representations of migrants; associational networks, and migrant oral histories.
  • Socio-political and socio-cultural aspects of democratic transitions in Spain and Portugal.
  • Processes of social and cultural incorporation of migrants and refugees to contemporary Britain.

Current postgraduate supervision

I am currently postgraduate advisor to Pedro García-Guirao, who is working on a PhD thesis entitled: An Anatomy of Exile, Return and De-exile: The writing and life trajectory of the former Spanish Anarchist Minister Juan López Sánchez.
