Ms Claudia Winspear is a Lecturer in Modern Languages at the University of Southampton.

Claudia is a Brazilian Portuguese native speaker, who has lived and worked in the UK for many years. She is a graduate of Southampton, having successfully completed a BA in Iberian and Latin American Studies in 1996. She also holds a prestigious Institute of Linguists DipTrans qualification in Translation and Interpreting, and is a nationally-registered public service interpreter for the Portuguese-speaking communities of the South and Southwest of England.

She is currently co-convenor (with Vicky Wright of the UK Subject Centre for Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies) of an innovative training course entitled Introduction to Medical Interpreting and aimed at Southampton General Hospital members of staff. Responsible for its design and implementation, Claudia is the lead instructor.

Research interests

Claudia is interested in expanding the distribution of and general acquaintance with interpreting services for the Portuguese-speaking communities in the South and Southwest of England, through the potential enhancement of a structured service provision.

Claudia is the course coordinator and lead instructor for the intermediate (Stage 5) and advanced (Stages 6 and 7) Portuguese language courses, and she is also involved in project and dissertation supervision and marking.
