Dr Kevin McManus is a Research Fellow in French Applied Linguistics in Modern Languages at the University of Southampton.

Before taking up my current position at  the University of Southampton, I was previously a Research Assistant on the ESRC-funded project 'Learning French from ages 5, 7 and 11: An investigation into starting ages, rates and routes of learning amongst early foreign language learners'.

Research interests

My research interests are in second language (L2) acquisition, primarily of French but also of German; in particular, the acquisition of meaning (e.g. tense, aspect, mood), morphosyntax and theory building in the field. In my research I seek to shed light on universal principles of language learning based on empirical investigations of L2 development. My research is primarily based on instructed learners and recently I have turned to addressing the role of instruction/explicit information in L2 development.

Research project(s)

Languages and social networks abroad (LANG-SNAP)

Social networks, target language interaction, and second language acquisition during the year abroad.
