Dr Laura Davies

Lecturer

Dr Laura Davies is a Lecturer in English at the University of Southampton.

I completed my PhD in eighteenth-century British literature at Jesus College, Cambridge, in 2009. Before arriving at Southampton in 2013, I was a research fellow at the Centre for Christianity and Culture (University of Oxford), held visiting research fellowships at Oxford Brookes and Chawton House Library, and worked as a secondary school teacher. I have taught for number of Cambridge colleges, on exchange programs for American undergraduates, and, most recently, at the University of Warwick.

My research focuses on the relationship between sensory experience and its textual representation in British literature of the long eighteenth century, with a particular interest in oral and aural modes. My work to date in this area has included studies of Samuel Johnson and James Boswell, oral traditions, speech disorders, dreams and dreaming, and the concept of the soundscape. I am currently working on a monograph on the subject of Listeners and Listening in Eighteenth-Century England.

I am also very interested in the written expression of religious belief and identity, and in cultures of writing within particular denominations. I have published in this area on literature and Methodism, gender and religious writing, and spiritual autobiography.

I teach on the first year module Narrative and Culture and convene the optional second year modules The Enlightenment Body and Women, Writing and Modernity. I also contribute to teaching for the MA in Eighteenth-Century Studies, including the Approaches to the Long Eighteenth Century and Unknown Jane Austen modules.

In addition, I am the Senior Tutor for English.
