Dr Mark Dinneen PhD

Lecturer in Latin American Cultural Studies

Dr Mark Dinneen is a Lecturer in Latin American Cultural Studies in Modern Languages at the University of Southampton.

Mark Dinneen took his first degree in Latin American Studies and then wrote his PhD on Brazilian literature for the University of Glasgow. He has spent periods of research in Mexico, Brazil and Venezuela. He currently chairs the Modern Languages Residence Abroad Committee.

Research interests

For many years Mark has carried out research on the popular culture of North East Brazil, particularly literatura de cordel, and its changing relationship with the region’s erudite literary tradition. This continues to be an interest, particularly how subaltern groups renegotiate the meaning of dominant cultural forms in new types of popular expression, and the effects of globalisation on regional popular culture. Current research focuses mainly on the changes evident in the production and dissemination of literatura de cordel and Brazilian popular woodcut prints (xilogravura).

Attempts to develop new forms of popular theatre in Brazil is another major interest, and Mark is now working on a collaborative project with researchers in Latin America which examines the work of Augusto Boal, and his attempts to create a new type of interactive theatre that can serve as a vehicle for radical social change.

Mark has also recently published studies of various aspects of contemporary Venezuelan culture. More specifically, he has carried out research on the Portuguese diaspora in Caracas, and on the cultural policies of the Chávez regime.

Mark teaches a variety of courses on twentieth century Spanish American and Brazilian culture and cultural history, and contributes to team-taught Modern Languages cultural studies units. He also supervises undergraduate dissertations and postgraduate theses on Latin American literary and cultural topics.

Mark would welcome enquiries from any potential research students with an interest in the following areas: Latin American popular culture; Brazilian literature; Latin American popular theatre (particularly Theatre of the Oppressed); media and cultural policy under the Chávez regime in Venezuela.
