Professor Matthew Johnson is a Visiting Professor of Archaeology at the University of Southampton.

I joined Archaeology at Southampton in 2004 from Durham, where I was Lecturer and then Professor. I was Head of Archaeology between 2005 and 2008, and was Deputy Head of School and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Humanities between 2009 and 2011. In 2011, I moved from Southampton to Northwestern University in the USA. I am now affiliated to Southampton in a Visiting Professor role, and continuing research and field projects in southern England in collaboration with Southampton staff and research students.

Research interests

My research interests include Archaeology of Britain and Europe, AD1200-1800, especially castles, traditional houses, ‘polite' architecture, landscape, and contributions to a global historical archaeology; and Archaeological theory, especially interdisciplinary and interpretive approaches, theory of medieval/historical archaeology, and archaeology in its cultural context.
