Professor Timothy Champion is an Emeritus Professor of Archaeology at the University of Southampton.

After a first degree in classics and ancient history and doctoral research in prehistoric archaeology at Oxford, my first academic appointment was at University College, Galway (now National University of Ireland, Galway). From Ireland I moved to Southampton and have been here ever since, except for periods when I held Visiting Professorships at the Universities of Michigan and Zimbabwe.

I am a former Editor of the Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society, and also served as Vice-President and then President of the Prehistoric Society. I am currently a Vice-President of the Royal Archaeological Institute. I am also a former member of various committees for English Heritage, including most recently its main Advisory Committee.

Research interests

My primary research interests are in the later prehistory of western Europe, and in particular the Iron Age of southern England. Recent work has been focused on the archaeology of Kent, where investigations in advance of development have transformed our understanding of the region.

Other research interests are concerned with the history of archaeology, especially the growth of an academic discipline and a recognised profession; the importance of archaeology as a source of ideas and images for national and imperial ideologies; and the political involvement in archaeology through the establishment of museums and the protection of sites and monuments.
