Hi, I'm Carly Newport and I studied BA Philosophy and Politics within Humanities at the University of Southampton.

The skills I learnt from my Humanities degree have proved invaluable in my career. Reading and understanding complex texts, analysing information and picking out the important parts is very useful, not forgetting learning how to solve probelms. Theses are all tasks I undertake everyday.

Studying the humanities helped Carly Newport achieve her aim of becoming a lawyer. “Philosophy teaches you to think,” she says. “Working in the law is all about advising and communicating, you have to be good at putting forward a case. But humanities students are usually good communicators.”

Although Carly always wanted to be a politician, she chose to enter the legal profession after graduating and took a one year law conversion course to learn all the necessary skills. She now works in employment law for Trethowans in Southampton and also gives her time to advise clients of the city’s Citizens Advice Bureau.

“Thinking back to my degree, the skills I learned while studying Philosophy have been very useful in my career. Reading and understanding complex texts, analysing information and picking out the important parts are valuable, not forgetting learning how to solve problems. These are all tasks I undertake everyday.”
