Catherine Coleman BA History of Art and English
Museum Curator

During my studies I developed good research skills which are invaluable with my work in museums ... I also got the chance to learn to give presentations.
Catherine is passionate about her job; she works at two museums in Hampshire helping parties of school children get the most from their visits. Dividing her week between HMS Alliance, the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport and Jane Austen’s House Museum in Chawton, Catherine enjoys the variety; no two days are the same.
“During my studies, I developed good research skills which are invaluable with my work in museums,” she says. “I also got the chance to learn to give presentations.” Now she uses her knowledge and creativity to come up with exciting ideas for young visitors - ranging from a sea monster theme one Halloween at the submarine museum, to devising a Regency dance for older pupils at Jane Austen’s house.
While at University, Catherine seized opportunities to take up work experience placements at Southampton City Art Gallery, museums in Winchester and a sculpture park. “I would advise today’s students to volunteer their time and take up any internships or work experience opportunities that come up, they will give you an insight into how organisations work.”
