Professional Archaeologist

Hi, I'm Thomas Goskar and I studied BA Archaeology, MSc Archaeological Science within Humanities at the University of Southampton.

Archaeology is a wonderful blend of art and science, and even if you do not want a direct career in archaeology, you can get a lot out of an archaeology degree. You will gain research skills, IT skills, experience of working as part of a team, and gain a good understanding of how the world works, and how we got where we are today.

How did you get interested in archaeology?

I grew up in Cornwall. There was a lot of archaeology around me, often very noticeable in the landscape. Picnics by stone circles on Bodmin Moor, rainy-day visits to the Royal Cornwall Museum in Truro where I was fascinated by the Egyptian mummy on display, the ancient past gripped my imagination.

Why did you choose to study at Southampton?

I chose to study at Southampton because of the infectious enthusiasm of the archaeology students helping out at the open day that I attended, and the promise of a wide variety of fieldwork opportunities.

What did you like most about your degree programme?

The degree gave me solid foundations for a career in archaeology. From the earliest hominids, through to the emergence of civilisation, up to the archaeology of the Cold War, as well as a history of the discipline of archaeology itself, it was comprehensive to say the least. I also enjoyed the fieldwork, and was able to volunteer for extra opportunities.

Which were your favourite branches of archaeology?

Given my background in rural Cornwall, I found prehistory from the Neolithic to the Iron Age to be particularly interesting. I have also always had the opportunity to tinker with computers, so archaeological computing, in particular visualisation techniques, really grabbed my attention.

What was the best thing about living and studying in Southampton?

Southampton is a city of many characters. There is everything here, whether you like old, modern, multicultural, and I enjoyed exploring all aspects of the city. The University facilities are excellent, and I had a great time volunteering with the Students' Union.

What have you been doing since you graduated?

I have been working as a professional archaeologist since finishing my MSc. I have worked in historic landscapes, Stonehenge, and a multitude of fascinating projects.

Has studying archaeology at Southampton helped you in your career?

It was essential. I simply would not have been able to be where I am today without it.

Are you still interested in archaeology?

Considering that archaeology is now my career, as well as hobby, I certainly am!

Would you recommend studying the subject to other people?
