Spotlight on Humanities student filmmaker
A television film directed and edited by first year English student Carly Brown has won the award for Best Drama at the National Association of Student Television Awards (NaSTA) in April 2011.
Flat 443 was filmed at the Glen Eyre hall of residence during 2010's winter snows. “I was surprised and delighted to win as it was my first film,” explains Carly, who has also worked for a London post production company.
She volunteered to work with SUSU TV, Surge student radio and Wessex Film on arriving at University. Up to now, Carly has directed SUSU TV’s coverage of the sabbatical officers’ elections - a three-hour broadcast with 60 crew, watched by 10,000 viewers - an ‘Apprentice’ show and the station’s Christmas broadcast as well as the drama.
Student scriptwriter Ellie Wilson also worked on Flat 443, which was described as ‘eerie and suspenseful’ by the judges at NaSTA. Carly’s future broadcasting plans include a collaboration with student actors on a period drama.
SUSU TV also won Best Comedy for Petty Crimes, produced by first years Andreas Day and Alastair Mogford, and received highly commended awards in the Best Video to Music and Best Animation categories. All can be viewed online at susu.tv.
