Humanities at Southampton awarded major funding for postgraduate students
Humanities has been awarded funding of £225,000 from the Wolfson Foundation for three postgraduate scholarships in Humanities.
Dean of Humanities at Southampton, Professor Anne Curry says: “I am delighted to be receiving these scholarships. They are a welcome support for postgraduate studies in Humanities and securing them is a testament to the quality of our staff, teaching and research, as well as our excellent reputation for doctoral study.”
These merit-based awards will be made to outstanding students, starting their doctoral study at the beginning of the academic year 2012/13, and who demonstrate the potential to be future academic leaders making an impact in the fields of history, literature and languages.
“We are delighted that charitable institutions like the Wolfson Foundation are able to help support the long-term development of the humanities. These subjects form an intrinsic part of the comprehensive world-class education, research and cultural heritage which makes the UK unique,” comments Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton, Professor Don Nutbeam.
In the first year of this pilot funding programme, the foundation is awarding over £2m to nine universities across the UK – a total of 27 scholarships. Each university has been offered three scholarships, one for each of the chosen disciplines.
Paul Ramsbottom, Chief Executive of the Wolfson Foundation, comments: “High-quality research in the humanities is of critical importance to British society. The announcement of this pilot scheme reflects our concern about the effect of undergraduate debt on numbers of students continuing to postgraduate research. We are also acutely aware of pressures on funding in the humanities.”
