David Owen Norris and Southampton students launch BBC Radio 3 Masterclass series

Published: 26 September 2012

This week some of our best student pianists joined David Owen Norris, Southampton's Professor and Head of Keyboard Performance, for a filmed masterclass for BBC Radio 3.

The new YouTube Masterclass was made in association with the Incorporated Society of Musicians, and forms part of the autumn 2012 Piano Season on the BBC.  In  ‘Sooner or Later - the Poetry of the Piano': David Owen Norris explores how to make melodies expressive on the piano, by changing the time.  Among a group of talented young players chosen for the series, Southampton pianists Cathy Liu and Elizabeth Caddy perform pieces from Mendelssohn's Songs Without Words, and work with Norris to interpret Mendelssohn's expressive indications.  Southampton alumni Dave Smith (Incorporated Society of Musicians) and Steve Polydorou (WashMedia) had important roles behind the scenes.  The film can be viewed on the BBC website for the rest of the piano season - see the links to view.

The masterclass was launched during the 24 September edition of 'In Tune' on Radio 3, when David Owen Norris explained some of his research on Mendelssohn's notated rubato to host Sean Rafferty.  The broadcast concluded with an excerpt from Norris's recently released recording, with Joseph Spooner, of Percy Sherwood's works for cello, recorded at Turner Sims last year.
