Applications are invited for a fully funded AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award between the Discipline of Archaeology, University of Southampton, and English Heritage.

The aims of the PhD are to develop a cost effective mechanism of assessing age-at-death from dental morphology in British archaeological skeletal remains (a dental attrition profile) and to develop methodologies for age estimation that can be broadly and easily applied by other researchers. The PhD will synthesise changes in dental morphology with social changes in dental treatment in historic and prehistoric British contexts in order to develop a nuanced understanding of change in dental morphology in relation to changes in diet and social practice in Britain.

The student will be registered at the University of Southampton and supervised by Dr Sonia Zakrzewski. Dr Simon Mays, as the Activity Lead for bioarchaeology in the National Heritage Protection Plan (NHPP), will be the English Heritage (Historic England) supervisor for a topic highlighted as advancing the protection of the historic environment and heritage through the NHPP. The student will be a member of the UK’s premier heritage organisations as well as participating in one of the foremost research intensive universities in the UK. Both partners will provide opportunities for training and career development.

Required: a high 2:1 honours degree and an MA (or equivalent) in either bioarchaeology, osteoarchaeology or related disciplines of palaeopathology, anthropology, anatomy or skeletal biology.

Desirable: experience of studying dental morphology; familiarity with computer databases; familiarity with statistical analyses.

The studentship is tenable for a maximum of three years, commencing September 2015, at an annual stipend of currently £13,863 and will pay postgraduate tuition fees at the UK/EU rate.

For further details of the project contact srz@soton.ac.uk

Application for the studentship is by CV; a sample of written work (max 2,000 words relating to ageing and/or the importance of age estimation); and covering letter, explaining why you feel you are suitable for this research project. Please also arrange for two academic references to be sent independently by the deadline. All material should be sent to pgafh@soton.ac.uk

Deadline for applications: Friday 22nd May 2015

Interviews will take on Friday 19th June 2015
