The Department of Music is excited to host one of the UK’s most original musicians, the award-winning jazz saxophonist, MC, broadcaster and producer Soweto Kinch, for a public panel discussion led by third-year Music students and a concert featuring work from his new album.

Since his first album was released in 2003 Soweto Kinch has amassed an unprecedented array of accolades including two MOBO awards, two Urban Music Awards, BBC Rising Star Award, BBC Best Jazz Instrumentalist and BBC Best Jazz Band. Kinch is visiting the department as the guest of the undergraduate Jazz History module to talk to students about his own journey as a jazz and spoken-word artist and his thoughts about perspectives for jazz today—in the UK and worldwide. The panel session on Thursday 2 March will be moderated by Dr Tom Irvine, who convenes the module, together with Southampton University jazz tutor Dan Mar-Molinero. Kinch’s visit to Southampton will continue Friday, 3 March at 8pm with a concert featuring work from his new album Nonagram at Turner Sims.

The panel discussion will take place in 6/1077 from 1-2.30pm. All members of the University community, and the public, are welcome to attend.

Tickets for the concert are available from the Turner Sims box office or by calling 023 8059 5151.
