We will be holding a one-day cultural event on Saturday 15th September consisting of a series of short talks led by experts from within Modern Languages at the University of Southampton. This thought provoking and inspiring conference will provide you with the opportunity to learn and improve your linguistic skills with help from academics of international distinction.

Do you want to brush the dust off your schoolroom French, improve your holiday German, practise your colloquial Spanish or indeed revive your skills in any language? Find out how at our language reActivation workshop which will help you to:

  • Discover what sort of language learner you are
  • Build your confidence in developing and using language skills
  • Find new and exciting ways of learning a language
  • Get a taste of a new language

All of which will help you to take the first step in reactivating your skills in whatever language(s) you have learnt in the recent or distant past no matter whether this was in a formal classroom or more informally through friends, family or work/travel abroad.

Sessions include:

Getting (re)started

In this session you will think about and share your past experiences of language learning, consider your reasons for learning a language and identify your preferred ways of learning?

What can you do?

In this session you will evaluate  your current skills in the language you have chose to reActivate. You will consider what areas of your chosen language you want or need to improve and reflect on what kind of learner you are.

Learning tools and resources

This session will allow you to discover and experience some of the wide range of resources currently available for language learning in a variety of formats (online and offline)

A taste of...

This session will offer you a chance to try a new language - you will find out what it is on the day!

Exploring your language learning strategies

In this session you will reflect on the language taster experience and discuss how to identify and make better use of your language learning strategies.

How to reActivate your language learning

This session will help you to find the right learning environment for you and introduce you to some of the options which might be available to you in the local area or online.

Places are limited, so book your place early to avoid disappointment.

Charges are:

£30 full rate

£20 loyalty rate (Harbour Lights Members, Friends of Parkes, English Teachers Network, university staff and alumni)

£10 discount rate (students/sixth form & college students and those in receipt of income-based Job Seeker's Allowance, Income Support, Working Tax Credit, Council Tax or Housing Benefit)

All prices include lunch and refreshments
