The Best Arguments for Press Freedom Event

Arguments for press freedom have often been short-changed in current debates, with an assumption that an appeal to rights of freedom of
expression can settle matters. But these appeals cover many distinct views of media freedoms, which need to be disentangled. This lecture will discuss appeals to the needs of truth seeking, of self expression and of civic and social life, and will aim to explore the limits and the strengths of each of the established lines of argument.

Onora O'Neill is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Cambridge, Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, and a crossbench member of the House of Lords. Among many other distinctions, she was President of the British Academy from 2005-2009 and chair of the Nuffield Foundation from 1998-2012. She was made a life peer as Baroness O'Neill of Bengarve in 1999. She has written widely on political philosophy and ethics, international justice, bioethics and the philosophy of Immanuel Kant.
