Event details

We will be holding a one-day cultural event on Saturday 19 October consisting of a series of short talks led by experts from within Humanities at Southampton. This thought provoking and inspiring conference will provide you with the opportunity to learn and engage in discussion about black history and related topics from academics of international distinction.

Coinciding with Black History Month, this study day will provide a chance to think about African lives over the past four centuries. Drawing upon the range of scholars working on African history at Southampton, the day will provide snapshots of life during and after the era of the European empires. The day will consider life in Africa in the earliest years of empire, slave life and rebellion on the plantations of the West Indies in the nineteenth century, through the black experiences of France in the jazz age, and on to African communities in postwar Britain.

The day will draw upon a rich range of African material culture, from sculptures and paintings to diaries and other personal accounts, to build up pictures of lives during some of the great periods of turmoil and change that have defined the modern world.

Programme

Dr John McAleer, 'West Africa in the Age of Empires'
This session will consider material culture as a way of looking at the experiences of West Africans between the seventeenth and early nineteenth centuries. It will also consider African experiences of the transatlantic slave trade.

Dr Christer Petley, 'A slave uprising: The Baptist War in Jamaica, 1831-2'
This talk will consider the slave uprising that took place in Jamaica in the 1830s. This talk will draw upon the rich array of primary sources from the time, such as images and the testimonies of the leaders of the rebellion themselves.

Dr Claire Eldridge, 'Black experiences in interwar France'
This session will consider France between the First and Second World Wars, exploring a different context to the mainly British context of today's sessions. It will look at black experiences during the jazz age, and how these sat alongside ongoing racism aimed against those from France's colonies.

Dr Christopher Prior, 'Taking on an empire'
This session will consider African nationalists living under British colonial rule. It will look at writings of these nationalists to better understand what it meant for Africans to live under colonial rule in the beginning and middle of the twentieth century.

Dr Sujala Singh, 'Postwar experiences'
This session will consider literature as a way of understanding certain black experiences in the postwar period.
