Event details

'Forging Freedom: the Duke of Wellington and British anti-slavery’ given by Professor John Oldfield

Established in 1989 with an endowment from the Spanish Ambassador, the annual Wellington Lecture explores aspects of the life and times of the first Duke of Wellington, one of the leading military and political figures of the 19th century.

Over the years the University of Southampton has welcomed a host of distinguished speakers to present the lecture. This year eminent academic and author Professor John Oldfield, a specialist in the history of slavery and abolition in the Atlantic world, will examine Wellington's role in relation to the British anti-slavery movement.

John Oldfield has published numerous books and articles including Popular Politics and British Anti-Slavery, Chords of Freedom: Commemoration, ritual and British transatlantic slavery and most recently Transatlantic Abolitionism in the Age of Revolution: an international history of anti-slavery. He was formerly Professor of Modern History at the University of Southampton and Director of the Southampton Centre for Eighteenth-Century Studies.
