Southampton's Head of Early Music, lutenist Elizabeth Kenny, joins viol consort Fretwork and renowned tenor Ian Bostridge for an evening of exquisite poetry and music.

Ian Bostridge is an artist with a longstanding international career as soloist, as an opera star and now as a writer (his A Singers Notebook was voted one of The Independent's Books of the Year).

Lutenist and composer John Dowland epitomises the spirit of melancholy,so fashionable in the Elizabethan period. In addition to the famous lute songs, Dowland¹s Lachrimae was a set of seven pavanes for five viols and lute, each derived from the lute song Flow my tears. It became one of the best known collections of consort music in its day.
