Event details

Music for a merchant at Home

Southampton University's premier vocal ensemble Cantores Michaelis cross the square from their usual home in historic St Michaels Church, to give a glimpse of musical life in the late sixteenth century in Tudor House, accompanied by lute players Elizabeth Kenny (Southampton's Head of Early Music) and Katarzyna Milek. Tudor merchants keen on singing, and hungry for the latest madrigals from Italy, needn't have been held back by not speaking Italian: Italian Madrigals Englished added English words to Italian tunes, fusing Italian passion and daring new vocal effects with stories accessible to an English audience. English music was never the same again.

There will be two performances of 40 minutes each: 11am and 2pm

Admission – Free. Entrance to the museum applies.

Today’s events are presented as part of the University of Southampton Music Department’s Festival of Italian Music, a three day celebration of the music of Italy, performed across the city by University of Southampton staff and students.
