"Listening as Redemption in the Aftermath of World War I"

Paris remained a surprisingly active musical centre during the Great War, and rebuilding of the city's musical institutions began as soon as peace was declared.  But for many the meaning of attending concerts and listening to music had profoundly changed.  Reviewers in the postwar years used their columns not only to evaluate works and performances, but also to reflect on aesthetic and ethical aspects of listening in the aftermath of war.  This presentation explores how Catholic musicians drew on concepts of suffering and redemption to construct listening as both act of remembrance and mode of recovery from trauma and loss.

Each of the Inaugural Lectures in Humanities will have an end of lecture collection for the speaker's nominated charity.  For this lecture Professor Brooks has chosen to support Action on Hearing Loss.
