Event details

The celebrated Dutch author, Isabelle de Charrière (1740-1805), who published in French and lived much of her life in Switzerland, visited England for several months in early 1767. She recorded her experiences in a series of lively letters.

6.30 pm drinks and canapés for 7.00 pm recital.

Dr Penelope Cave and Dr Katrina Faulds return to Chawton House Library to give a special performance of music Belle might have heard during her stay, along with representations of English musical life as portrayed in letters to and from her friends and acquaintances. Charrière’s oeuvre comprised novels, pamphlets and plays, and several musical compositions. A selection of her sonatas for keyboard will be performed during this magical evening.

Penelope Cave is an international prize-winning harpsichordist. Her solo CD, From Lisbon to Madrid, received 5 stars from the BBC Music Magazine. Katrina Faulds has completed postgraduate studies on the fortepiano and clavichord. She recently obtained her PhD from the University of Southampton on social dance and dance music at Tatton Park.

Tickets cost £18.50 or £15.00 for Friends and students.
