'Challenges and Opportunities in Contemporary Mexico'

As part of MeXsu's (Centre for Mexico-Southampton Collaboration) Mexico Week to celebrate the special 'UK-Mexico Cultural Year 2015', we will be holding a day of talks and exhibitions around the theme of 'Challenges and Opportunities in Contemporary Mexico' on Saturday 31 October. This will include talks on the current threats to Mexico's social, cultural and ecological environment from political and social to natural influences, including the notorious narcotraficantes.  Violence exists in Mexico today in many forms, as well as innovation and hope.  The talks will include discussions around culture and music in contemporary Mexico and how they respond to this environment.  The afternoon will feature a talk by Jon Bonfiglio the director of the renowned Clipperton Project (www.theclippertonproject.com).  There will be an exhibition displaying the work of the project, focussing on its work in Mexico, on show at Avenue Campus during the week leading up to Jon's talk, and he will give a tour of the exhibition during the Study Day.  The Project explores issues of sustainability and understanding of the natural environment in both remote rural areas as well as busy urban sites. The event is free and will include a Mexican-style lunch however you must register to attend.
