This is the fourth annual F.T. Prince Memorial Lecture. These lectures are given every year in honour of the poet and scholar F.T. Prince, who was one of Southampton’s first English professors. Invited speakers explore new directions in literary studies, drawing on the English department’s wide range of intellectual interests.

Daljit Nagra - 'Who is Britain?'

In this special event, poet Daljit Nagra reads from his forthcoming collection British Museum, and reflects on ideas about the nation state and global English in his work.

Daljit Nagra was born and raised in West London, then Sheffield. In 2004 his poem 'Look We Have Coming to Dover!' won the Forward Prize for Best Individual Poem, and his first collection of the same name won the 2007 Forward Prize for Best First Collection and was shortlisted for the Costa Poetry Award. In 2008 he won the South Bank Show/Arts Council Decibel Award. Tippoo Sultan's Incredible White-Man-Eating Tiger Toy-Machine!!! (2011) and Ramayana (2013) were both shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize. He is currently Poet in Residence at BBC Radio 4 and 4 Extra.

This lecture will be chaired by Dr Will May, Senior Lecturer in English.
