Lunchtime Concert Series

The music of twin composers Effy and Litha Efthymiou has been described as “Brilliantly realised” (Time Out, Tamara Gausi, 2008) and “deeply immersive” (Simon Cummings, 5against4, 2015). With awards and commissions from PRS Women Make Music, Arts Council England, Wellcome Trust, Consortium 5 and the International Guitar Foundation among many more, they are “fast becoming names to watch” (Beth Brearley, The Fashion Globe, 2014).

Effy and Litha are bringing their new multimedia venture ‘Rituals to Mould Her With’ to Turner Sims this winter. Like all their staged compositions, it has a strong theatrical, choreographical and directorial style, fusing music for harpsichord, electronics, percussion and found objects with theatre and movement. The project unites "Britain's most progressive harpsichordist" (The Independent on Sunday), Jane Chapman, with two rising stars of the theatre and dance worlds, actor Esmé Patey-Ford (West End debut Hand to God, Vaudeville Theatre) and dance artist Harriet Parker-Beldeau (recent collaborator of Willi Dorner, Charles Linehan and Wayne McGregor).

‘Rituals to Mould Her With’ is a conceptual stage work inspired by the musical ritual that celebrated the Virgin Mary in early-medieval Spain. The composers and performance artists have drawn material from 1500-year-old manuscripts and engaged with cutting-edge research at the University of Bristol, uncovering how the ‘Mary Ritual’ was a loaded and powerful tool used by prominent men to shape and communicate male ideals for femininity.
