Dementia is a progressive condition affecting over 47 million people around the world, with nearly 10 million new cases yearly (World Health Organisation 2017).

Conversely, dementia is an umbrella term, of various diseases the most known types are Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia and Lewy Body dementia. It affects the person’s activity of daily living, reasoning, thinking and learning, and there is no known cure.

The aim of the study day is to provide attendees, with an overview of dementia and to help gain an understanding of the changes and processes that occur within the brain, as well as, symptoms and ways to better support and understand the person living with dementia. This will be achieved through short lectures, interactive activities, audio-visual clips and discussion of case studies. Following completion of this workshop, attendees will have acquired a good understanding of dementia, its pathophysiology, presentation, progress and effects. However, attendees will be equipped with the knowledge to better understand and support person living with dementia, but not providing diagnosis and/or professional treatment.
