Medicine Behind Barbed Wire: Interned Medical Refugees on the Isle of Man
Despite important work on the politics and culture of internment, little is known the about health conditions of internees. Questions arise as to the identities of interned medical personnel; what was their role in looking after the physical and psychological health of internees, given the restricted recognition of medical and dental degrees until 1941. A life history approach shows some internees had survived German concentration camps. Here an issue is the extent of mental illness and suicide.
Tea and coffee will be served before the start of the lecture from 17:30 outside Lecture Theatre C, and after the lecture there will be further refreshments available.
Speaker Information
Professor Paul Weindling is Research Professor in History of Medicine at Oxford Brookes University. He has been on advisory commissions concerning National Socialism for the President of the Max Planck Gesellschaft, 1999-2004; on the Robert Koch Institute, 2005-9; on the German Association of Psychiatry, Psychotherapy, and Neurology (DGPPN), 2010-2012. He is co-president of the commission on the medical faculty of the Reich University Straßburg. He has started a new project to research the life histories of patients killed for research by Institutes of the Kaiser Wilhelm/ Max Planck Society. He holds the Anneliese Maier Prize of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, and is member of the German National Academy of Sciences.
Publications include Health, Race and German Politics between National Unification and Nazism (1989), Epidemics and Genocide in Eastern Europe 1890-1945 (2000), Nazi Medicine and the Nuremberg Trials: From Medical War Crimes to Informed Consent (2004), John W. Thompson, Psychiatrist in the Shadow of the Holocaust (2010), and Victims and Survivors of Nazi Human Experiments: Science and Suffering in the Holocaust (2014). He recently edited: From Clinic to Concentration Camp: Reassessing Nazi Medical and Racial Research, 1933-1945 (Routledge); with Herwig Czech, Österreichische Ärzte und Ärztinnen im Nationalsozialismus.
