Event details

How does abstract music and dance elicit emotional responses from audiences? What can evolutionary biology tell us about emotional reactions to art? Do the sonic qualities of sad music relate to the physical qualities of sad dance? Is there any universal basis to emotional expression in art? What emotion do sadness and surprise combine to produce? Why do we want to see art that make us feel sad? Why does sad art sometimes make us happy?

Drawing on a range of fields (music and dance theory, cultural studies, anthropology, psychology and aesthetics), dancer Shila Anaraki and violinist Aisha Orazbayeva explore such questions, with examples, performances, experiments and quizzes.
