Event details

Sound has a special place at the University of Southampton, both through its Music Department and its Institute of Sound and Vibration Research (ISVR) – an internationally recognised centre for research and education in all aspects of acoustics, audio and vibration. Students on our unique Acoustical Engineering degree course can study how loudspeakers can produce 3D stereo sound, how ultrasound can see inside the human body, how the noise of a turbofan jet engine can be reduced, how marine mammals can communicate across the ocean, and how musical instruments make their characteristic sounds.

In this free evening lecture Matthew Wright, who lectures on Musical Instrument Acoustics at the ISVR, will be joined by acclaimed pianist David Owen Norris for an evening of science and music. You will be taken on a scientific journey through a single piano note, from the player’s brain, through the piano itself, the acoustics of the Turner Sims hall and into the listener’s ear, looking at all the science and engineering to be encountered along the way and showcasing some of the University’s research and facilities, interspersed with musical performances.

Doors open at 18:30.

Suitable for Key stage 3 and up.
