Event details

We are delighted to announce that on Friday 22 February 2019, from 10am-1pm, Roderick Williams (baritone) and Iain Burnside (pianist) will be giving a masterclass on Schubert song. The masterclass is open to members of the public (free admission), and participants will include students and alumni of the University of Southampton Department of Music.

Roderick Williams specialises in a wide repertoire, from baroque to contemporary music, won ‘Singer of the Year’ in the 2016 Royal Philharmonic Society Awards, and was made an OBE for services to music in June 2017. Iain Burnside is a Scottish classical pianist and accompanist, and a composer, and is well-known for his work as a presenter on BBC Radio 3.

The evening before the masterclass, on Thursday 21 February 2019 at 8pm, Roderick and Iain will give a recital of Schubert song at Turner Sims Concert Hall, which will be preceded at 7pm by a talk by Dr David Bretherton.

These two events, which coincide with LGBT History Month, form part of David’s AHRC-funded research project, ‘Queer Music, Queer Theory, Queer Music Theory’, and are also supported by Turner Sims Southampton.

Tickets for the Vocal Masterclass can be booked via 'book now' link above (free admission, with refreshments). You are welcome to attend without booking, but booking will help us estimate catering numbers.

Tickets for the Schubert Recital can be purchased via the Turner Sims Southampton website at https://www.turnersims.co.uk/events/roderick-williams-sings-schubert/
