Event details

By the School of Humanities and Parkes Institute, University of Southampton

This study day will feature two exciting key note talks by leading experts as well as smaller, interactive sessions that will allow you to develop and share your own ideas. There will also be plenty of opportunities to ask questions: about the main topic for the day and about what it is like to live and study at a university like ours.

Our main theme for the day is ‘the end of the world’ …

It has happened before and will happen again: life on Earth takes radical new directions. Is it happening now? Have we started unstoppable processes that will bring about the end of our world as we know it? Thoughts like those might seem scary!

But perhaps we have to confront them, not least if we are to explore the alternative futures that we could shape for ourselves.

This study day is aimed at sixth-formers and is about how humanities subjects can help us to make sense of the past and shape the future, allowing you to explore how people have imagined and reacted to world-changing calamities, from ancient times to the present day.

Above all, it is designed to help provide a sense of what good can possibly come of thinking about the end of the world!

Some potential questions:

  • Have all human societies been fascinated by the prospect of The End?
  • Why does thinking about apocalypse inspire such fascination?
  • How can science and the humanities work together to make sense of the end of the world?
  • How should we respond to the threats to our future existence?

This study day is also about Humanities at University. You will be able to find out more about:

  • Why studying the humanities is so important to how we understand ourselves and our world
  • What it is like to come to university to study a humanities subject
  • Where that can take you in your later career, and in life!

We welcome bookings from teacher-led groups or from individual students. To book your place please complete and return the booking form to Tracy Storey (bookings close on 12/06/20).
