Smartphone apps that promise to help one fall asleep abound. In addition, a great number of apps have a sleep timer function, suggesting that users might fall asleep, or might want to try to fall asleep while the app is running. Perhaps not surprisingly, these are by and large audio apps – generative music, audio books, etc. – with little or no visual content. They advertise themselves specifically as able to bypass certain thought processes and induce others. All of these apps and, by extension, many of the mood altering technologies proliferating at the moment, promise a new arena of design and control that is the interior landscape of the apparent subject.
