Hi, I'm Alexandra Walker and I studied BA Archaeology, MA Archaeology, PhD Archaeology within Humanities at the University of Southampton.

It’s great to be part of such a vibrant community of researchers with a real passion for archaeology.

Where were you born? Where did you grow up?

I was born in Newport, Wales and grew up in a village north of Cardiff.

What was your first degree in? Where did you study it?

BA Archaeology followed by MA Archaeological Representation, both at the University of Southampton.

What made you decide to study archaeology at postgraduate level?

I’ve had a love of archaeology since I was a child and my decision to continue to study at postgraduate level stemmed from this love as well as a means for furthering my career.

Why did you choose to study at Southampton?

Archaeology at Southampton is excellent for its research and I wanted to be part of a community that is always pushing forward in its understanding of the past.

Tell us more about the areas of archaeology that you are now specialising in

I specialise in archaeology and museums, particularly the handling of museum collections. My research is focused on understanding how important objects are in museums and how the interpretation of the past through objects is enhanced through tactile and tangible experiences with artefacts, not just by professionals but by everyone.

Are you enjoying your studies? What do you like most about your degree programme?

I am enjoying my studies; it’s great to be part of such a vibrant community of researchers with a real passion for archaeology.

Do you get on well with the academic staff?

Yes, particularly my supervisor Stephanie Moser who has been a constant source of encouragement and inspiration throughout my time here.

What’s the best thing about living and studying in Southampton?

I’ve been living in Southampton since 2002 and still love living here. The great thing about it is that you only need to head a few miles out of the city to find beautiful countryside with so much history attached to it. I’ve made some wonderful friends and have a great life down here.

What has been your favourite moment so far?

Having the opportunity to share my research with other researchers and staff at the Postgraduate Archaeology Symposium which takes place every year. I enjoy the challenge of presenting my work and seeing the response of my colleagues to the contentious issue of object handling.

What are you planning to do after graduating?

I hope to work in museums and galleries post-graduation and in particular with the public. I currently work part time for Hampshire Museum Service as a Loans box coordinator to fund my studies. I’m very fortunate to work somewhere that links in with my research.

Do you have any advice for people considering studying archaeology at postgraduate level at Southampton?

Find something you love and go for it – it really helps to have a passion for your research area especially during the writing process!
