Hi, I'm Sheila Thomas and I studied MRes History within Humanities at the University of Southampton.

My specific area of research also means that I have close contacts with other disciplines within the University.

Following my BA in History, I became interested in aristocratic families in the 18th- and early 19th-century. I had a couple of articles published and wanted to develop the theme.

Southampton’s excellent reputation and exceptional resources made it the obvious choice. Before applying for postgraduate study, I had made extensive use of the Hartley Library. The help of the staff there has always been extremely supportive and friendly.

I am reading for an MRes in History. The major piece of work is a 30,000 to 35,000 word dissertation, which means that I can make use of the research findings that I have accumulated over the past couple of years. My specific area of research also means that I have close contacts with other disciplines within the University.

I have found the contact with other students and with the academic staff stimulating and challenging. It was particularly enjoyable taking an option in the first semester which led to new areas of academic interest.

There are only very few formal contact hours so it is necessary to be disciplined and organised in order to be on target for producing the dissertation. Obviously, this is what I would have expected for postgraduate work.

I decided to study history after a career where I was a computer security specialist. I thoroughly enjoyed my time as a mature undergraduate. If anything, I am having an even better time as a postgraduate!

I have already applied to do my PhD at Southampton and hope to start this autumn.
